WINELANDS POP-THE-QUESTION CONTEST

There are many ways to make that special proposal, from the usual dinner-and-candlelight scenario to all sorts of decidedly unusual approaches

SAFINDIT wants to hear about your marriage proposal – the more original the better. The top-three proposals stand to win a lunch or dinner to the value of R500 per couple at Paarl’s Laborie Wine Estate. So start writing about how you managed to pop the question.

The surprise factor usually scores major points – but there are limits. Steven Sparks, from Brighton in the UK, is a case in point. The Mirror recently published the following story:

Wedding smells as woman says yes after marriage proposal in sewer.

Carolyn Payne was flushed with pride when her boyfriend got down on one knee and popped the question - in a sewer. The 29-year-old from Brighton didn't smell a rat when boyfriend Steven Sparks, 41, took her on a tour of the city's sewers.

But the PA was stunned when, after the guide asked: "Has anyone got any questions?", Steven replied "I've got one - for Carolyn... " Property developer Steven said: "Anyone can get engaged over a candlelit dinner but I knew this was unique. My only worry was I'd drop the ring down the drain."

The couple have yet to name the day but Carolyn said: "One thing's for sure - we're going to get married above ground."

Then there’s the recent mountain-top marriage proposal that went wrong in North Carolina, US, when the couple were struck by lightning. The super adventurous ought to bear in mind that sometimes less is more – simple and meaningful can be spectacular, not to mention a lot safer.
